oh, neat.  i didn't know about that.  well then, Hari: does that suffice or 
would you still like to see the support added like i mentioned above?  i may 
be spending a bit of time adding some other features to check_apt in the next 
couple weeks (better chroot/vserver support, possibility to run as non-root 
for the update/upgrade pair option).
