[Nagiosplug-help] secure remote checks

Hi,

I'm just starting out with Nagios. One of the things I'd like to do is  
check for load, disk usage, etc on remote machines. It looks to me  
that the only secure way to do this is with check_by_ssh. I'm thinking  
of using the -C option and coupling this with passive checks. Am I  
barking up the right tree? Is there no need to use the passive check  
mechanism?
My model would be 1 nagios server, and multiple machines which can  
only be reached by ssh.
