User choice is ideal.

The statistics output format is standardized, see the plugin dev
docs on that. Some plugins (APAN plugins in particular) take
care of the storage in a RRD on their own, but I personally
consider this a bad idea. It is better to have that data handled
coming out the backend then in between nagios and the plugin.
Less moving parts in plugins is idea, especially since the
mailman plugin may not be running on the Nagios server.
