Jason,
While I think this suggestion has merit, we usually use check_xxx --version
to grab the version number (which also displays the release version too). Is
there a specific reason you want the what identifiers?

Might I suggest that the plugin guidelines be amended to suggest that the
what/ident identifiers be included in the source code?
For compiled binaries the standard is usually to create a string constant
with the contents
@(#)$Header$
with CVS expanding Header. Interpreted scripts can just put that string in
the comment field somewhere.
Doing so will make gathering the version information for a set of installed
plugins easier.
