I've just tried it and it works fine. ngettext is defined in 
intl/gettextP.h as:

extern char *__ngettext (const char *__msgid1, const char *__msgid2,
                          unsigned long int __n);

So I'm guessing that the compiler has converted the float to an int. 
But I'm happy to take advice if anyone knows better.
