After I had all the basics from the previous email done I then moved the whole 
tarball to a Solaris 8 server. Reran configure and did a make. It worked better 
and my make now looked like this.

gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I. -I. -I. -I. -I. -I.     -g -O2 -c check_disk.c

So the other problem I was seeing seems to be a FreeBSD thing.
